People may choose to keep their old traditions from their native country or to accept new ones. Keeping the old customs will help one to overcome the cultural shock and the change of the environment. From the other side, accepting the new traditions will help one to adapt and make new friends with residents. In this essay I will give different reasons why people decide to follow the customs of the new country or to keep their own customs.

If one is from the country with strong and old traditions, I think it will be rather difficult for him to adapt to the new customs and moreover to reject his own. That is why some people from the same country try to live together and to create their own community where the old traditions are kept. They can not break the customs that were created by their ancestors. For example, some nations are restricted in certain kinds of food by their traditions. So, they do not go to the restaurants unless their traditional food is served there. Some nations according to their customs have to wear certain types of cloth because their religion tells them to do so.

From the other side, if one is from the country with traditions similar to ones of the new country it will be easy for him to adopt and to follow the customs of the new place. He will not feel much difference. Probably, the most difficult part of his relocation will be to accustom to the new climate.

I think that people of the new country are friendlier when they see that foreigner follows their customs. I belief that traditions of every country deserve respect, especially, when one lives there. In summary, I think that every country has its own beauty and if one wants to find out more about it he will love it.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. This is a famous English proverb, which is a self-evident truth. When we travel to another country with a culture very different from ours, we should, and sometimes, we have to, adapt to the local customs. For example, we are used to using chopsticks when we have meals, but you have to adopt forks, knives or spoons at dinner if you visit a North European country.

Another case in point is that businesswomen having a business trip to the Middle East. They had better wear a scarf to cover their hair and head because the religion and culture ask women to do so in there. If you fail to adapt to the local customs or practices, you are surely running into troubles.Nowadays, it is very important for anyone who wants to be successful to be adaptive. With the globalization in economic, cultural, and political spheres, the world is becoming smaller. The ability to change in order to meet the new requirement is one of the top tasks for all individuals as well as for the enterprises facing intense competitions all over the world.

With flexibility and adaptability, we will win. With rigidity and stubbornness, the society will make very slow progress or even become stagnant.

there is no denying that we should do as the romans do when in rome. this is an accumulated experience we inherit from our forefathers, and now it is still widely applied to our daily life. the old saying tells us vividly that wherever we are, we should do everything according to local customs.

the proverb has profound impact on our interactions with people from other cultures. as far as i am concerned, i have had the experience myself. last year, my neighbor, xiao wang and i went to the u.s. to travel. one day we were lost and it seemed we would never find our way back to our hotel. suddenly an elderly lady came near us. excited and trying to be polite, xiao wang approached her and asked, “excuse me, how old are you?” this polite opening remark in chinese culture made the lady stare at him in surprise, because age is a taboo in western cultures. seeing the embarrassment, i asked, “beautiful weather, isn’t it?” of course the lady said “yes” and happily told us the way to our hotel.

a lesson that can be drawn from the above example is obvious. whether we know the local customs will play a crucial role in our relationship with others. more importantly, doing everything as the locals do will help us make more friends and avoid troubles.

What is a culture? Although there is no an agreement about the definition of culture, people generally consider it to be the ways people eat, play, dress, drink, think, and work.

When one person travels in a foreign country, the foreign culture is not necessarily completely incompatible with his or her native ways. Therefore, it is not always true to do in Rome as a Roman Does.

If one travels in a public culture, that is, where the social order, economic and other relationships between people are maintained by laws rather than by custom or kinship, it is safe for the traveler to do things in his or her own ways, because the public culture welcomes different or even conflict opinions, people, and ways.

Take New York, the big pot, as a typical case in point. In this city everybody has an angle and everyone has the right to do whatever delights him or her in cast that it is not illegal.

If one travels in a folk culture, however, it is better to do in Rome as Romans do. A folk culture is a culture featured by clans, kinships, and customs.

In a folk culture different ways of doing things are less welcomed. In such a culture, if one remains his or her own ways of doing things, hardly can he or she be able to enjoy the journey. Worse, the traveler might be in the deep troubled water.

Therefore, whether one must follow the new ways of doing things and whether one must keep the native culture depend on a variety of specific conditions.
