What is personality ? How does knowledge about personality hlep us?First of all, let us take a look at what personality means. In general, when psychologists talk about personality, they are usually looking for things that make a person different from others or things that can explain how a person is not the same as others. However, different psychologists have different ways of explaining what personality is. They often use tests to put people into categories and compare them. For example, people who are quiet and like to spend more time at home reading and doing their own thins are called introverts. others who enjoy going out and spending time 。

others who enjoy going out and spending time with other people are called extroverts. They often use tests to put people into categories and compare them? my taste

since i was a child, i always dream about playing table tennis. i did play some nice ball games, but i often got beaten badly. however, it didn‘t reduce my interest in table tennis. i was crazy to stand in front of table and raised my paddle. as soon as i got off the school, i would rash to tennis table right away. there were few tables on the school, therefore i had to wait for a long time to play but my skill didn‘t improve much. nevertheless, i didn‘t care about it. i thought i had a good time in playing table tennis and i listed it as my best taste.

now, i am grow-up and have left school for a while. i don‘t have time and hardly find a friend to play table tennis. but doctor said i needed some eercise for my health. i figured out i still could play table tennis, only if i played the ball against the wall. many of my friends passed by my house. they llikely came in to see me, because they heard the noices of ball bouncing back and forth. it was my eercises in playing table tennis without table. they were curious about my crazy action. i didn‘t mind they made fun about me. i, on the other hand, liked to introduce to them that was my taste and fancy way of eercise.

private cars have become an important aspect of people’s life in many parts of our country, especially in large cities such as beijing, shanghai and guangzhou. while they bring much convenience to people, they are also widely criticized.

there are some arguments for owning private cars. in the first place, cars allow people to move around freely, which greatly improves our living standard. we can easily drive cars for sightseeing on weekends. in the second place, cars are a comfortable way to travel, especially in bad weather. last but not least, the car industry can boost economy by creating many job opportunities in production of steel, rubber, glass and so on.

however, there are also many good arguments against cars. first of all, they pollute the environment by emitting harmful gases and giving out loud noises. in addition, cars cause a large number of traffic accidents, which bring great misery to the victims’ families.

as far as i am concerned, we should limit the number of private cars by providing better mass transportation and better service for the people. everyone should sacrifice his or her own interest for the common good of the society.

  Defeat the defeat

If there is any single factor that makes for success in living,it is the ability to profitby defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyzedefeat and actually profit by it in his next undertaking. Confuse defeat with failure, and youare doomed indeed to failure. For it isn't defeat that makes you fail:it is your own refuse tosee in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of.They are routine incidents in the life of every onewho achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without humiliation, analyze it and learn why you failed.Defeat,in other words, can help to cure its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can arouse within us such acompelling desire to succeed.

If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away,he will cling more and more tightlyuntill his whole weight is suspended. It is this same reaction which should give you new andgreater strength every time you are defeat. If you can defeat it and exploit the power which defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more than you are capable of .

three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love ,the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. these passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

i have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy -- ecstasy so great that i would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. i have sought it , net, because it relieves loneliness-- that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world , into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. i have sought it, finally, because in the union of love i have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. this is what i sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what -- at last -- i have found.

with equal passion i have sought knowledge. i have wished to understand the hearts of men. i have wished to know why the stars shine. and i have tried to apprehend the pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flu. a little of this, but not much i have achieved.

love and knowlidge , so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. but always pity brought me back to earth. echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of lonelines, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. i long to alleviate the evil, but i cannot, and i too suffer.

this has been my life. i have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

as the sister of the victim, lorraine was invited to attend the eecution. shed waited through eleven years of investigations, trials, and appeals, but when she got the call, she declined, choosing instead to stay home and organize her linen closet. the damask napkins, some from her mother and more later from emily, had been wadded for years together in a drawer. lorraine spent the day sorting them by size and style, then laundering, starching, pressing, and folding them. she replaced the napkins in the drawer in neat little stacks.

she read about the eecution the net day in the newspaper. at 8:57 p.m. ct, the u.s. supreme court denied an application for a stay from edward martin bruer, 37. he was served his final meal at 2 p.m. his choices: 8-ounce hickory smoked beef sausage, cracker barrel cheese, wendys double cheeseburger with pickles, onions, lettuce and mayonnaise, french fries and ketchup, a kosher pickle, a vidalia onion, coke classic and breyers viennetta ice cream cake. he said no when asked for any last words. he was pronounced dead by lethal injection at 9:21 ct.

all that food. lorraine scanned the list for clues, eplanations, but all she saw was a rough palate, a powerful appetite, the simple necessity of predators. could he have eaten it all? perhaps gluttony was his revenge. someone would have to clean the body.

lorraine pondered edward martin bruers dessert choice. it was a new thing. shed seen the commercials on tv. tiny portions served in champagne-sherbet glasses, passed around a well-appointed table. silver spoons pinging against crystal, the dinner guests wanting more. the voice-over: one slice is never enough. bruer must have loved that.

although it was late, close to 4 a.m. on the day after the eecution, lorraine drove to albertsons and purchased a viennetta.

she thought at first of making an occassion of the viennetta, setting her table with a china plate, one of the good napkins and a dessert fork from the sterling flatware, flowers, like the ice cream cake party on tv, but tried instead to imagine edward martin bruers eating of the cake, the last part of his last meal. what kind of dishes do they have in prison? she doubted they were like those metal plates shed seen in old black and white prisoner movies, bar-clangers. would bruer, preoccupied, even notice what his cake tasted like and how it was served or would he be hyperfocused, thinking, i am eating for the last time, this is the last spoon ill hold in my hand.

that was one thing about her sister, lorraine thought. observe and learn, emilyd say. catch the note and trick, shed say, taking her beloved henry james much too seriously.

lorraine was certain that emily would have laughed at first, finding edward martin bruer in her kitchen that night, his doughy, sweaty face lit by the one bulb shining from inside the open refrigerator. emily always laughed at horrible things. the thrill of the real, she called it. like the purplish slick of dried blood theyd seen on their fathers black leather wallet when theyd been called to the police station to claim his belongings after the suicide. emily held the wallet toward the fluorescent ceiling lights and rocked it in her palm, making the blood shimmer. look at that, she said, laughing, how could it be so pretty?

lorraine could picture emilys eyes, intense and engaged, watching every blow to her own chest and abdomen, trying to feel the sound, the swoosh and splat into her flesh, watching her own arms rising then falling away, repulsed. emily wasnt one to decompensate. her own murder would not have been lost on her.

lorraine spooned into the vanilla swirls of the ice cream cake. she eamined the bite before she tasted it, the alternating layers of vanilla and shards of chocolate shell, a repackaged childhood treat. she and emily, little girls on their first outings alone, would walk the four blocks from home to the campus dairy bar, their hands sweating with clutched dimes and quarters, and order a dipped cone to share. emily would eat all the chocolate off the top, leaving the ice cream to lorraine.

the spoon was cold against her teeth as the ice cream slid onto her tongue. lorraine closed her eyes, swallowed, waited for a picture to form, waited for tears, nausea, horror, anything, but emilys death had, over the years of waiting, begun to make sense to her, become well-worn and ordinary, as if the death had written itself back upon emilys life, making all other endings impossible to contemplate.

lorraine sliced into the cake by spoonfuls, enjoying its simple, familiar taste, eating until her forehead burned with cold.

almost everyone in our class can sing the song little grass. it runs like this: not so fragrant as a flower, nor so tall as a tree, i am a blade of obscure (unknown) grass. never lonely, never worried, i have friends all over the world. oh spring wind, you blow me green. oh, sunlight, you shine on me. mountains and rivers, you nourish me. the eartb, our motber, holds me tightly in her arms. whenever i sing it, i feel serene(calm) and comforted. the words make me satisfied with the surronndings wbere i work and study. the music reminds me of the beautiful scenery of our country. when i sing this song, i recall my ten years country life. i feel as if i could hear the sound of water running down the stream in front of the country school. i smell the sweet flowers even now. the birds are twittering in the grein mountains. the children come to me, their first and only woman teacher with flowers and smiling faces. everything is so beautiful. i feel like a big queen in a small country i iove the song. it gives me strength and warmth and happiness.

there is another song which is popular among the young. it has a sad note, which makes one feel sad and lonely and disappointed. the song, the deep sea, goes: oh, the deep sea. why are you so uneven, just like my lovers wavering heart? oh, young frtend, please tell me frankly. do you know my lover? where is he now? where has he gone? the plaintive melady makes one cry. as you sing, you feel as if a lonely girl, deserted by her lover, is ouring ont her heart in tears. she is standing by the seaside. the ea water is rolling wave upon wave, in unison with the beat of the ad song. the wind is tearing at the girls hair and skirt; you feel biseouraged. although the mountains and rivers are beautiful, she is not in a mood to enjoy the sights. all her attention is focused on herself. she thinks only of her own loss and gain; she is sad and lonely and completely isolated. i would rather not sing this song.

the little blade of glass is obscure, but she doesnt feel lonely because she takes root in the earth. she is not angry nor frustrated when she is not noticed. she needs nothing and can endure everything.

the girl who stands by the seaside may be attractive and has many acquaintances, but she is sad and isolated. she wants to be loved, to be sought after, and when she fails to get what she needs, she is discouraged, and maybe even wants to commit suicide. its dangerous for her to stand by the seaside.

both are lyric songs. yet one is an image of modesty and generosity, the other is an image of loss and sorrow. the former gives confidence in life, the latter causes one to lose courage and strength. the grass feels indebted to everything around her, the mountains, the rivers, the wind, the sunlight and the earth, while the girl feels her lover owes her love and comfort.

from the songs i come to this conclusion: forget yourself and you will be happy; think always of yourself, and you will feel lonely. personal gains and losses are nothing when you immerse yourself in the masses. there are two kinds of musie, optimistic(樂觀的) and pessimistic(悲觀的). optimistic music stimulates people to do more for the publie. pessimistic music dampens ones spirits (打擊人的情緒). that is why i prefer little grass to the deep sea.

self esteem, also called self respect, is the respect we have for ourselves, for our belief in our ability and in the value of what we do. self-esteem makes us independent in our thoughts and actions. it makes us feel confident that we can do things well and maybe even better the net time. it is an important quality we must have if we want to achieve success in whatever we do.

the degree of self esteem varies from person to person. people with high self esteem believe that they can finish whatever they have started. for eample, they are active in class and can epress their ideas clearly. they are the people who are likely to succeed in their lives. those with middling self-esteem are like those with high self esteem, but they are not so sure of their own value. those with low self esteem, however, have many problems. they are sad most of the time. they are afraid to start activities. they feel that no one loves them. they cannot epress their ideas properly. in discussions, they listen but do not talk because they are afraid that they may say something wrong and may be laughed at. they are the people who need attention the most.

so in order to get more self esteem to live a successful life, we must firstly realize its importance. we should also seize every chance to practice gaining more self-esteem. we hope that we would have enough self-esteem so that we may have more chances to succeed in this competitive world. in the meantime, we should help those with low self esteem to have more self respect and confidence in whatever they do.
