lorraine spooned into the vanilla swirls of the ice cream cake. she eamined the bite before she tasted it, the alternating layers of vanilla and shards of chocolate shell, a repackaged childhood treat. she and emily, little girls on their first outings alone, would walk the four blocks from home to the campus dairy bar, their hands sweating with clutched dimes and quarters, and order a dipped cone to share. emily would eat all the chocolate off the top, leaving the ice cream to lorraine.
the spoon was cold against her teeth as the ice cream slid onto her tongue. lorraine closed her eyes, swallowed, waited for a picture to form, waited for tears, nausea, horror, anything, but emilys death had, over the years of waiting, begun to make sense to her, become well-worn and ordinary, as if the death had written itself back upon emilys life, making all other endings impossible to contemplate.
lorraine sliced into the cake by spoonfuls, enjoying its simple, familiar taste, eating until her forehead burned with cold.

the little blade of glass is obscure, but she doesnt feel lonely because she takes root in the earth. she is not angry nor frustrated when she is not noticed. she needs nothing and can endure everything.
the girl who stands by the seaside may be attractive and has many acquaintances, but she is sad and isolated. she wants to be loved, to be sought after, and when she fails to get what she needs, she is discouraged, and maybe even wants to commit suicide. its dangerous for her to stand by the seaside.
both are lyric songs. yet one is an image of modesty and generosity, the other is an image of loss and sorrow. the former gives confidence in life, the latter causes one to lose courage and strength. the grass feels indebted to everything around her, the mountains, the rivers, the wind, the sunlight and the earth, while the girl feels her lover owes her love and comfort.
from the songs i come to this conclusion: forget yourself and you will be happy; think always of yourself, and you will feel lonely. personal gains and losses are nothing when you immerse yourself in the masses. there are two kinds of musie, optimistic(樂觀的) and pessimistic(悲觀的). optimistic music stimulates people to do more for the publie. pessimistic music dampens ones spirits (打擊人的情緒). that is why i prefer little grass to the deep sea.

self esteem, also called self respect, is the respect we have for ourselves, for our belief in our ability and in the value of what we do. self-esteem makes us independent in our thoughts and actions. it makes us feel confident that we can do things well and maybe even better the net time. it is an important quality we must have if we want to achieve success in whatever we do.
the degree of self esteem varies from person to person. people with high self esteem believe that they can finish whatever they have started. for eample, they are active in class and can epress their ideas clearly. they are the people who are likely to succeed in their lives. those with middling self-esteem are like those with high self esteem, but they are not so sure of their own value. those with low self esteem, however, have many problems. they are sad most of the time. they are afraid to start activities. they feel that no one loves them. they cannot epress their ideas properly. in discussions, they listen but do not talk because they are afraid that they may say something wrong and may be laughed at. they are the people who need attention the most.
so in order to get more self esteem to live a successful life, we must firstly realize its importance. we should also seize every chance to practice gaining more self-esteem. we hope that we would have enough self-esteem so that we may have more chances to succeed in this competitive world. in the meantime, we should help those with low self esteem to have more self respect and confidence in whatever they do.

with the appearance of printers, the pen becomes less useful than before. and since the computer was created, paper is also gradually giving way to the screen, which can show lively moving things from different sides in the same picture. it is true that with the developmem of science, such products as computers and printers will be the major tools in our future life and work. but the traditional tools will also eist for a long time to supplement the function of the modern ones. at least, we still need pens to sign with and paper to sign on.
