Think a minute! Youve probably heard the expression “A leopard can’t change its spot.” Which, of course, is true of leopards. But is it true of people? Can people change? Are we human just creatures of habit? Do we not have any control over our actions and habits?
One guy said, “Bad habits are like a comfortable bed: they’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” Someone else said, “The chains of habits takes effort, yet one of the greatest freedoms in life is the freedom from bad habits.
Habits are like the roads we take through life everyday. The problem is not every road takes us where we need to go. Our routes through life become our ruts in life, which we end up stuck in and find it hard to dig ourselves out. That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our “second nature”, because our habits become our character and our character becomes our life. As one wise person said, “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”
But we humans don’t like to change, do we? So we come up with excuses, like: “I can’t be different, that’s just the way I am.” Or “I was born this way.” And the good old saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that’s just it, we’re not dogs or animals. In fact, we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we want to become. So what habits do you need to start changing today?
No one can have failed to notice the fact that water shortage is a grave problem with which the whole world is confronted. Actually, it has become so widespread that it has severely affected peoples daily life and hindered the development of the global economy.

With these measures taken, it is reasonable
for us to expect a brighter future.

The year of is getting closer and closer to us. we need to take actions from now on to prepare for the game. what we need to do most is to work on our disadvantages and shortcomings. as a student of senior high, i can do my own part. although i cant transform our city into more a beautiful place on my own, i can help beijing in small ways and encourage our classmates and people around me to follow my lead.
Let me take the environment for eample, the atmosphere around beijing is quite disappointing, factories and cars keep giving off ehausts into the air, we can hardly see the blue sky with our naked eyes, because the sky is covered with a thick layer of harmful substances. the sky is gray instead of blue. to our delight, the government has passed some laws of protecting the air, and we can do something useful, too. for eample, whenever we go out for a long distance, ride the bike or take the buses and subways instead of tais. you may not have a clue how it works. of course doing that only by one person is far from enough, but we can let more people do that together. in that case the result may be more than we bargained for.
Another thing we need to work on is our english skills. teachers and parents often put great emphasis on our english skills especially listening and speaking. i want to be a volunteer in , to be an interpreter. for now, i must do something helpful to improve my spoken english. rome isnt build in a day, so is english. it cant be improved in a day or two. it takes time and energy. there are no shortcuts to improve your spoken english; the most productive way is to grab all opportunities around you to open your mouth. for instance, taking part in all kinds of english contests is a good way, you can meet some ecellent contestants, and you can share the eperience of learning and some good method of learning. i will keep participating in all english activities to polish up my english. im sure by the year of , i will be able to master english well just as my mother tongue.
All in all, im sure that beijing olympic games will be one of the most successful games in history. i believe our long-cherished dream will be fulfilled in a perfect way!
I am writing to put up some suggestions concerning our teaching and campus life.
As a sophomore from the Math Department, I am quite satisfied with the present condition of my university, but I餯 like to say that there is still some room for improvement.
First, I believe that more attention should be paid to the guidance of our study methods. To some extent, university students are capable of studying by themselves, but more often than never, we find ourselves at a loss as to choose good books to read and appropriate topics for our research. It is clear that we need some advice from our teachers. If our teachers can lecture more on how to learn by yourself for us, especially for the freshmen, our skills will be further improved.
Second, more activities should be conducted to make our campus life more colorful. I餸 sorry to say that the present life on campus is quite boring. Every day we have classes, read in the library, or stay in the dormitory. Life here is routine. We need more meaningful activities organized to enrich our college life and enable us to study more efficiently.
Teachers often get a chance to evaluate their students. Now the situation has changed. Schools allow students to evaluate the work of their teachers. This causes discussions about whether teachers should be evaluated by students. The views vary from person to person, and I prefer to say yes to this act because it provides a good way for teachers to learn their disadvantages and improve the quality of teaching.
Firstly, it’s a good way for students to express their opinions about teachers and lectures. From the expression, teachers can learn their advantages and disadvantages, which is important to improve their teaching skills. Secondly, students often evaluate teachers by doing some questionnaires, which are questions and selections on the paper, ranging from teachers skills to homework arrangement. Teachers can get much useful information from these questionnaires. Besides, the evaluated result will be submitted to school leaders who will judge whether the teacher is qualified or not. Finally, students will be motivated to pay more attention during classes and to listen to lectures more regularly, since they will be asked to give their own opinions about what they’ve heard. Of course, when students do the evaluations, they should be objective and impartial so that the evaluated result can be more useful and persuasive.
From what has been discussed above, we may confidently come to conclusion that teachers should be evaluated by students.
Getting to Know the World outside the Campus It is necessary for college students to know the world outside the campus. This is because in this “Information Age” the society is developing so fast that we should keep pace with the progress of the outside world. Therefore, without knowledge of the outside world, it will be difficult for us to secure an ideal job after graduation; it will be more difficult for us to succeed in the near future. How to know the outside world? First of all, we should be well informed about what is happening around us with the help of mass media: radios, televisions, newspapers, the Internet, and so on. Moreover, we should do more practical social services so as to cultivate our social skills, widen our eyesight and enrich our social experience.
As for me, I plan to know the outside world in two aspects: study first to have a good command of knowledge. At the same time, I intend to hold a temporary job to know more about the outside world.

I think lots of students like the pop singer named Jay. I also like him very much. When he released his first album, I started to buy his album. And I never miss any album of his.
Do you know as a boy, Jay was called Dull Stupid. But his mother Yeh Huimei, noticed that the quiet, shy boy seemed to dance practically when he heard the Western Pop music she used to play. His mother sent him to a piano school when he was four. When he has grown up, he had developed an ability for instant playing beyond his years. I learned to play the piano from 7 years old to 13 years old. I often feel bored when I practise playing the piano. But Jay was always crazy about playing the piano. I think he really likes music. So I admire him very much, and I call him “hero”.
I admire Jay. The real reason is when the others all denied him, he never gave up. He tried his best to change his life. I think it is good for everybody. I hope that everyone can learn from him---try their best to do everything. Then I think we will make the grade.

I still remembered the day when I was interviewed. Before I came to the company, I had practised many times and my friends pretended to be the employers, asking me all kinds of questions. So I made some preparations and believed that I wouldn't lose control. At the beginning, the employers asked me some simple questions, which I had prepared, so I felt confident. But when they asked me about the company, I forgot to search enough information. But I told myself to calm down, so I expressed my wish to work here. Two days later, I was informed that I got the job. My heart was beating very fast, just liked I had conquered the world.

As the technology of public transportation keeps advancing, more citizens can choose to dwell in the cities that are beneficial to their own development. Inevitably, there occurs a controversy whether moving to a new city or country will lead to the rupture of relationship among friends. From my perspective, I think the statement is not sensible.
Firstly, moving to a new country or city will not result in the loss of old friends. To be more specific, the maintenance of friendship doesn’t lie in how far they live with each other and the development of technology has diversified the ways of interacting with friends. The invention of cellphones break the shackles caused by distance and overseas students can choose to communicate with their family members and friends through a variety of Apps like WeChat that makes video calls possible. Except for that, by looking at the pictures popping up all over the social media like Facebook, people can easily capture what is happening to their friends. For instance, my friend Selina took selfie in the Sydney Opera House a week ago and I would learn that she was having fun in the Australia with her picture posted on the . Therefore, a wide range of advanced electronic gadgets can be used to sustain friendship.
Moreover, instead of losing old friends, city migrants can even enlarge their social circles and achieve more success. Restricted in a city for a long period, people may be trapped in a situation that would block their development and they can gain refreshing experience while immigrating to a new city. My friend of Mine named Michael served as a Market Analyst in a renewed company in Beijing. However, he couldn’t see any progress in recent years and then an opportunity comes out. Because of his five-year working experience, a foreign trade cooperation tried to recruit him as the Market Analyst because the firm was planning to start a new program. Then he grasped the chance and earn a challenging life that he likes even though he was required to work in Shanghai. Our relationship have not experienced any interruption and his strong ability of being adapted to the new environment helps him to make lots of new friends. Accordingly, moving to a new city can, occasionally, help to break the deadlock in our professions.
Admittedly, it can be sensible that friends can be estranged owing to the long distance with each other. Specifically speaking, the chances to meet with each other will be limited a lot. However, as I just put, for one thing, people can talk with each other through various social network software. For another thing, the distance between cities is not a problem anymore since there have been many public transportation tools like the high-speed trains and airplanes that will lead us to anyplace we try to go in a very short period.
In a word, moving to a new city or a new country is good choice under some circumstance. Besides, the highly developed technology can help to strengthen the relations with our friends and the possibilities of living a different life and achieving success can both explain why I stand by the statement that it is a good thing to move to a new city.
Everyone have a daily schedule. Most of people changes it every day, the others keep the same one every week. Actually, I have a regular weekly schedule.
Monday is one of the most important days in a week. I think I always make a weekly schedule at first, which is a good way to plan my life. For example: Last week on Monday from 8:00am to 3:40pm, which time was finishing my school class. After that, I would take a nap until 4:45pm. Then, I went to library to learn English, of course, The DynEd Courseware. It’s not good for my health that I don’t have enough time to have dinner. Between 10:00pm and 11:00pm, I practiced my body in the gymnastic because I want to lose weight. I usually go to bed at 12:00pm.I play the computer game once a week on Friday evening with my friend. One week’s work make me tired, so it’s a special time for me to have a rest. This is my daily routine from last week, include five work days.
Saturday and Sunday are different from other five days. Because I have a lot of classes, such as: karate class in Shichahai and English class in soho high street. Just I think it is more useful for me than my school class. Keep practice my body and brain are the most important things on the weekend. Usually, I finish my English work in the morning and work out in the evening. I like my life plan is very regular, which is good for my healthy. But I don’t have enough time to take a rest, maybe sometimes I feel tired. Keep doing, I will get benefits from my schedule.
All of this is my weekly schedule, my daily routine same as everyday. It ’s very interesting, my schedule make me look like an old man. Believe it or not, I will never give up and try my best to achieve my dream.
In my family, there are only three people, my parents and I because of myparents’ work, they could only have one child at that time, so I don’t have anysiblings.
I felt so lonely when my parents went out for their work. Now thegovernment changed their policy, people can have the second child. But somepeople refuse because they think they can’t afford it. Despite the expense, there are many advantages to have the second child. For one thing, the onlychild can have someone company, so they won’t feel lonely on the process ofgrowing up. For another thing, two kids will help each other, they can sharethings together.
Learning to share things is a very important lesson forchildren. In Chinese tradition, more kids, more better, but I think two areperfect for the family.
Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore? I was like that ship before my education began, only I had no way of knowing how near the harbor was.
The most important day I remember in all my life is the one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came to me. I am filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects. It was the third of March, 1887, three months before I was seven years old.
On the afternoon of that exciting day, I guessed vaguely from my mother’s signs and from the hurrying to and fro in the house that something unusual was about to happen, so I went to the door and waited on the steps.
I felt approaching footsteps. I thought it was my mother and stretched out my hand. Someone took it, and then I was caught up and held close in the arms of the person who had come to reveal all things to me, and, more important than that, to love me.
The morning after my teacher came she led me into her room and gave me a doll. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word “d-o-l-l”. I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it. When I finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was filled with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and made the letters for doll. I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I simply made my fingers go in monkey-like imitation. In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way many words, among them, “pin”, “hat”, “cup”, and a few verbs like “sit”, “stand” and “walk”, but my teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has a name.
One day while I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan gave me my old doll, too. She then spelled “d-o-l-l” and tried to make me understand that “d-o-l-l” applied to both. Earlier in the day, we had a struggle over the two words “m-u-g” is “mug” and “w-a-t-e-r” is “water” , but I persisted in mixing up the two. I became impatient and, seizing the new doll, I dashed it on the floor, breaking it into pieces. I was not sorry after my fit of temper. In the dark, still world, I had no strong sentiment for anything.
My teacher brought me my hat, and I knew we were going out into the warm sunshine. We walked down the path to the well-house. Someone was drawing water, and my teacher placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream gushed over one hand, she spelled into the other word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still; my whole attention was fixed upon the movements of her finger. Suddenly I seemed to remember something I had forgotten — a thrill of returning thought – and the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that the “w-a-t-e-r” meant that wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul and set it free.
I left the well-house eager to learn. Everything had a name and each name gave birth to a new thought. As we returned to the house, every object which I touched seemed to be full of life. That was because I saw everything with a strange, new sight that had come to me. On entering the door I remembered the doll I had broken. I felt my way to the fragments and tried in vain to put them together. Then my eyes were filled with tears, for I realized what I had done, and for the first time I felt sorry.
I learned a lot of new words that day. It would have been difficult to find a happier child than me when I lay in my small bed that night and thought of the joys that day had brought to me, and for the first time I longed for a new day to come.
The university opening ceremonythe deeply impressing feelings are as much a part of me now as they were a year ago.
As the day to register and become a freshman in FDU approached, excitementincreased.Beingauniversitystudent meant I was finally coming of age. Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions and doing what I wanted without someone looking over my shoulder.
Despite months of anticipation, nothing could have prepared me for the impact of the actual day.Among thousands of new comers sitting on the broad lawn in front of the famous XiangHui Auditorium, listening to the speeches by the principal and student representatives, I felt myself consumed by a rush of both joy and nervousness. What would college be like? Would the other students like me? And what about the workwould I be able to keep up? Being a student in high school seemed to offer little assurance of my being able to survive college, especially in FDU which is abundant of excellent counterparts. Panic set in.It had been nice being respected as a senior by the underclass students for the past year;I didn't quite enjoy the idea of being on the bottom rung of the ladder again.I was not assured whether I wanted to grow up after all.
As if in a daze, I rose up with my new classmates around to show respect to the school song which was to be performed. As the solemn music flowed, I knew that I was hearing not just a song but the foot step of a brand new life. Exciting as the prospeet of a new life seemed, it wasn't quite easy saying goodbye to the old onethe familiar faces, the familiar routine. I would eyen miss those days when fully engaged in preparing for the college entrance exams though they were so tiring and the long commute between home and school that took me several hours each week. Good or bad, it was that I knew.
This September, I was one of the volunteers to welcome the new comers and guide them around the campus. I found the familiar mixed feelings shown on their faces. I needn't have worried about if I would like FDU, since my year here has turned out to be one of the best years of my life. Although going back to those days is impossible, it's comforting to know I can revisit my special memories any time.
Everyone has goals. Many people do not reach their goals for lack of planning. These three sets of goals should be developed: lifetime, intermediate and short term. Lifetime goals should be written out. These goals should be clear and reasonable. For instance, the goal to win a research prize is clear and measurable. Other lifetime goals might include publishing a certain number of influential books or articles, earning a departmental chairmanship at a major university, successfully competing for a grant from the National Science Foundation or securing a consultantship with a big corporation.
Intermediate goals relate to outcomes during the next few years. For the beginning doctoral student, intermediate goals may include completion of course work and preparation of a doctoral research proposal. Like lifetime goals, these are measurable and clearly stated.
Short-term goals involve outcomes expected during the next 12 months. These goals are more performance oriented, and they help with achievement of intermediate goals. Examples of short-term goals are earning an A in a course, learning how to program a computer or performing an experiment.
Discovery is not such a big and noble word that only experts and scientists are entitled to use. In fact, every one of us makes discoveries as we grow. For example, a baby will find out how he can play with his toy car after he has tried several times. We will discover how to ride a bike skillfully after practicing again and again.
Often a discovery brings great joy to the person who makes it. You will certainly be delighted when you find the thing you have been looking for. You will be extremely happy when you one day realize that you have learned and mastered a skill or method which was almost too difficult for you at the beginning.
Sometimes, however, discovery means regret or even pain. You witt feet great regret when you find that you have hurt one of your friends or one of your family members. You will surelybe disappointed when you discover that you failed in the examination for which you have prepared for a tong time. Nowadays, more andmore university students find it hard to find a good job after graduation. However, the employers also fint it difficult in hiring a suitabale staff at the sametime. Why does this happens? I think there must be something related to the graduates.
First of all, many employers find that most students have nothing working experience concerning with their major. As students’ main job in school is study, employer should not make too high requirement to them actually. But students should have aninternship before entering the society or at least have a concept about the job related to their specialized subject. Most students know nothing except the textbook, which makes them feel hard to get start. What’s worse, some graduates don’t learn well in school. They neither have experience nor master the the oretical knowledge. In addition, the majority of students are the little prince and princess at home. They haven’t suffered any hardship with the protection oftheir parents. As a result, they can’t endure hardship or easily give up when meeting difficulties.
To summarize, the graduates should try their best to improve themseves to get out the embarrassing situation of finding jobs. That also makes recruiting much more smoothly. I firmly believe this situation will be better in the future.
By the time children enter school, they’ll have spent up to one-third of their waking hours in front of TV. The enormous influence of television is just beginning to be realized. While many parents take television as an electronic baby-sitter, they neglect the fact that television may be more harmful than it is beneficial to children.
Those who encourage small children to watch television claim that many programs for children on TV are helpful to develop children’s interest and enrich their knowledge. They also argue that preoccupied with TV programs, children are prevented from doing mischief. Although at a first glance these arguments sound true, the behavior of some children doesn’t seem to prove them.
In the first place, programs for children are not always beneficial to them. One science fiction serial keeps telling about some supernatural beings who can fly and always fight against evildoers. After watching several episodes, a small child was so enchanted that he imitated the heroes and “flew” from his room on the second floor. There are also reports of children running away from home to the mountains to practice martial art. These incidents are naturally credited with TV programs for children.
Further, being preoccupied with TV programs is not a good way for avoiding mischief. In the days before TV, parents used to gather together with their children, telling stories or reading poems to them. The communication between parents and children was thus better, so it was easier for children to understand what was good conduct.
Those who approve of children’s watching TV neglect television’s bad effects on children. Firstly, children are surrounded and bombarded by commercials for toys and foods. They are tempted into becoming consumers. They earnestly ask their parents to buy things which they do not really need. As a result, the parents are in a financial dilemma, and the children themselves always become victims of bad products because of false advertising.
Another bad effect of television is that children are over-exposed to violence. They watch hours of murders, fights, and crimes every week, with no adult around to tell them that life is not like that most of the time. The effect of the heavy dose of violence is to suggest to children that violence is an ordinary way of life, and that shooting and cheating are ways to success.
Most serious of all, children who often watch TV are becoming passive. They just sit back and let things happen to them. Children are inventive; they have the ability to imagine a whole world of their own. But what happens when their imagination is not needed, when TV does all the imagination for them? Obviously, these children are not going to grow up as inventive and imaginative as their parents, for they have been robbed of creative impulses by television.
To sum up, children’s indulgence in television is harmful. The problem, nevertheless, is not one of prohibition. Parents should supervise and guide their children’s watching TV instead of parking them in front of the tube, hoping it will act as a baby-sitter.

Punctuality means observing regular or appointed time.A man who gets up at six o'clock every morning is punctual.A man who promises to call on a friend at five o'clock in the afternoon and actually does so at that hour is also punctual.
The unpunctual man,on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time.He is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters,to return calls, or to keep appointments promptly.
Undoubtedly,unpunctuality is harmful.
Getting up five minutes later than usual may upset the plan of the day.Calling on a friend five minutes later than the appointed time may cause unexpected trouble to both sides.Failure to be punctual is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to a dinner but arrives later than expected,he keeps all the other guests and the host waiting for him alone. This is great impoliteness. Moreover, habitual unpunctuality leads to indolence and even failure in life.
