英文詩包括格律詩、無韻詩和自由體詩。
在英文格律詩中，輕音和重音是按一定規(guī)律出現(xiàn)的。常見有七種：一輕一重叫抑揚格；一重一輕叫揚抑格；一重兩輕叫揚抑抑格；兩輕一重叫抑抑揚格；一重兩個音節(jié)叫揚揚格；一輕兩個音節(jié)叫抑抑格；含一輕一重一輕三個音節(jié)叫抑揚抑格。我們可以根據(jù)一個詩行中重音出現(xiàn)的規(guī)律和音步的數(shù)目說出它的格律，即所謂的格律分析或音步劃分。
韻律——
詩歌不一定押韻，但一定有節(jié)奏（韻律）。節(jié)奏在英文中叫rhythm，源自希臘，意為流動（flow）,即從一點向另一點有張有弛地運動。我們?nèi)绾斡靡舨椒▉矸治鲇⑽脑姷墓?jié)奏呢？就拿格律詩為例吧。首先把每個詩行分成若干個音節(jié)，并區(qū)分哪些是重讀音節(jié)，哪些是非重讀音節(jié)，找出它們排列的形式，以及這種排列形式在一個詩行中出現(xiàn)次數(shù)，也就是行內(nèi)所含的音步數(shù)目。答案補充押韻——
所謂押韻，是指相同或相似的重讀音節(jié)先后出現(xiàn)在兩個或更多詩行的相應(yīng)位置上。英文詩押韻的種類可分為全韻、近似韻（也稱有缺陷的韻）。全韻是指押韻時必須押在由不同輔音開頭的重讀音節(jié)上，其中元音相同，跟在這個元音后面的輔音或其他非重讀音節(jié)也必須相同；近似韻有三種情況，即最后的輔音相同，但前面的元音相似而不相同；元音相同后面的輔音不同，謂諧元韻；重讀元音不同所有的輔音都相同，謂諧輔韻
另一個跟押韻有關(guān)的詩法手段是詞首韻，是指相同的音素（主要是輔音）重復(fù)出現(xiàn)在一些有關(guān)聯(lián)的單詞詞首部位。
英語詩的韻律較為復(fù)雜，根據(jù)押韻的音在詩行中的出現(xiàn)位置可以分為尾韻和行內(nèi)韻兩種。尾韻押在詩行最后一個重讀音節(jié)上，是最常見的押韻部位，這和漢語詩的押韻相同；行內(nèi)韻是指詩行中間的停頓或休止前的'重讀音節(jié)與該行的最后一個重讀音節(jié)押韻。
答案補充按照押韻的音節(jié)多少，又可分為：
單韻，又稱男韻。所押的韻音局限于詩行中重讀的末尾音節(jié)，這種韻體強勁有力。
雙韻，又稱女韻。押韻于連接的兩個音節(jié)上，后一個為非重讀音節(jié)，這種韻體常給人以輕快、幽婉之感。
三重韻，押韻于三個連接的音節(jié)上，多用于幽默詩、諷刺詩中。
英文無韻詩是指不押韻但有固定的韻律和長度。
英文自由體詩的主要特征是不遵循傳統(tǒng)的音韻格律，詩行長度不規(guī)則，它的節(jié)奏單位不是音步，而是更大的詞群、短句甚至段落。
另外，英語詩歌中經(jīng)常使用一些只有在詩歌中才用的詞匯，例如thine（your）。
